When We Are Closed

What to do if you need to contact GP services outside normal surgery hours

Out of Hours Telephone Number: Please dial our number 01242 215015 and you will be directed to our out of hours service or phone 111 (NHS 111)

clockThe ‘out of hours’ service covers all patients registered with a doctor’s surgery in Gloucestershire and is a service run by dedicated out of hours staff including doctors, specialist nurses and other health and social care workers.

If you need urgent treatment or care ‘out of hours’ that can’t wait until the GP surgery re-opens – you only need to ring one number for help.

‘Out of hours’ is the period of time between 6.30pm and 8am on weekdays and covers all day and night at weekends, bank and public holidays.

To ensure that patients benefit from quick access to help, please do not use this number for prescriptions, test results, or routine matters – it is for urgent out of hours medical matters only.

Contacting this number will put you through to specially trained NHS staff who are used to dealing with confidential medical information. They will make sure that you receive the right advice and help quickly.

The staff who talk to you on the telephone will ask you some questions to establish what help you need e.g. your name, address, the name of the your GP and the reason for calling. During this call, these staff will either:

  • pass the call to a doctor or nurse who may be able to deal with your problem over the phone
  • offer you advice on self care
  • refer you to a local Primary Care Centre (PCC – a place where doctors, nurses and other staff see people who require urgent treatment or care ‘out of hours’)
  • call out a member of the on-call team, who would be able to carry out a home visit if there is a need
  • or in an emergency send out an ambulance.

If you have general comments or concerns about the care and treatment you receive as part of the out of hours service you can contact the Community Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 08000 151 548.

NHS 111

In the case of urgent need when the practice is closed you can call NHS 111 (111) to speak to a triage nurse. Your needs will be assessed and advice offered or arrangements made for you to see a doctor.

Please do not ask to see a doctor out of hours unless you genuinely cannot wait until the surgery re-opens.

Call 999 in an emergency. Chest pains and / or shortness of breath constitute an emergency.
