Job summary

St Georges Surgery in Cheltenham is a friendly and supportive practice providing a high level of quality clinical care to over 11,400, patients. We are seeking a suitably qualified Healthcare Assistant to join our team.

The post holder will under supervision of the lead practice nurse/practice manager and undertake tasks and duties delegated by the practice lead nurse or a suitably qualified regulated professional. They will work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of the patients, following policy and procedures.

Duties to include:

  • Venepuncture
  • Weight management & advice
  • Minor surgery assist GP in providing minor-surgery sessions, coil fits and Implanon fittings
  • Chronic disease management
  • Undertake appropriate investigation, clinical observations and interventions following agreed guidelines for patients with chronic diseases CHD, Diabetes and Hypertension
  • Wound care
  • Removal of stiches and clips
  • NHS health checks
  • Effectively manage own time, workload, and resources
  • Produce accurate, specific, and complete records of patient consultation
  • Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards

  • Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines
  • Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks
  • Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills
  • Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards
  • Actively reporting of health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediately when recognised
  • Keeping own work areas and general / patient areas generally clean, assisting in the maintenance of general standards of cleanliness consistent with the scope of the job holder’s role
  • Undertaking periodic infection control training (minimum annually)
  • Reporting potential risks identified

Personal/professional development

The post holder will participate in any training programme implemented by the practice as part of this employment. Such training to include:

  • Participation in an annual individual performance review including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development.
  • Taking responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work.

Person specification

Essential

  • Qualified in phlebotomy

Desirable:

  • Experience of working in a GP practice
  • NVQ qualification
  • Familiar with Systmone
